A Break from the Garden
Do you need a garden break? I ask because even I, who love plants and all things plant-lovely, think that I might need a few days.
I was going to start winter veggies in my bottle depot room today. But after hours yesterday of slogging around a muddy roof with my son and cleaning up the summer container garden, I am thinking it can wait a little bit. The summer garden was a lot of work-which I enjoyed-but you all know my dissatisfaction with the amounts harvested.
Have you heard of planting in potting soil bags? I had not but I would like to research it more. There was an article about it in last month’s Mother Earth News and a letter in this month’s issue (with a picture) from Mary Blanchard of Two Rivers, Wisconsin.
My first thought was that it isn’t very aesthetically pleasing but my second thought was that if someone was planting directly in the ground (which I seldom do), it beats digging up the dirt. If you have information on how to grow in this fashion, please comment. I will follow up with some experts on this subject and write a post on it.
In my few days of taking a garden break, I will work on the following:
- Covering the fish pond with a net because a beautiful blue heron has been fishing.
- Winterizing the yard and putting things inside that might blow away.
- Trying to find the cover for the grill.
- Going through our emergency kit and replacing needed items before the power outages, etc start.
What about you? Anything on the list that you need to also accomplish?
How about turning the compost heap? And making some compost tea, for the garden.
Excellent idea! Thanks for sharing. Tell me more about compost tea, if you can. ~Flora
Also, how about reading garden books? Jasmine did a review of “Chicken Justice” this week. See it here: http://mygardenspaces.com/SFblog/?p=485
This is my first year using compost tea: most of my plants are delighted– a few clearly unhappy. Too much/too little of something– as the leaves are yellowed!
I wonder how you find just the right combination in a compost tea? Anyone have ideas? Sounds like a post!
